Zio Monitoring: A Major Advancement In Cardiac Medicine

Zio Monitoring Zio monitoring has quickly been embraced by doctors as a groundbreaking method for evaluating and treating cardiac arrhythmias.

Compared to traditional Holter monitoring, Zio monitoring provides an extended testing period of up to 14 days. At Premier Heart & Vein Care, we’ve seen increased accuracy for detecting abnormal heart rhythms, while offering patients greater comfort and flexibility than past alternatives.

What Is Zio Monitoring?

Zio monitoring involves the use of the ZIO® Patch, a wireless and discreet ECG device that captures every heartbeat of the wearer. It’s a big improvement over its technological predecessor, the Holter monitor, which typically records heartbeats for 24-48 hours.

The Zio Patch extends that monitoring duration to two weeks, significantly improving the test’s accuracy and giving patients’ doctors new insights into cardiac rhythm abnormalities.

How Does Zio Monitoring Work?

During your visit to Premier Heart and Vein Care in San Luis Obispo, our specialists will apply the Zio Patch to a clean area on your chest.

The patch adheres securely and comfortably to the skin throughout the monitoring period. It’s electrodes record your heartbeats as you go about your day-to-day life.

If you experience any unusual cardiac symptoms, you simply press the top of the Zio Patch and record the symptom in a booklet or smartphone app. At the end of the monitoring period, you remove the patch, place it back in its original box, and send it off for analysis and — ultimately — a revised healthcare plan.

What Are the Advantages of Zio Monitoring?

Advantages of Zio monitoring range from less invasive techniques to better testing:

  • Longer monitoring period: The 14-day duration of the Zio monitor means an extended assessment of your heart’s rhythm, increasing the likelihood of detecting irregularities.
  • Subtle and convenient: Small and discreet, the monitor goes directly to your skin. It’s comfortable while minimizing disruption to daily activities.
  • Improved tracking of symptoms: The ability to record symptoms using the patch and associated app means better correlation between symptoms and patterns of heart rhythms.
  • Proven diagnosis: Detailed analysis leads to accurate diagnosis and customized treatment plans.
