Understanding Lymphedema
When the lymphatic system leaks fluid from an injury, it often leaks outside of the body or becomes properly drained by the lymphatic system. However, when fluid leaks inside the body and isn’t able to be drained properly, it causes lymphedema. Lymphedema can cause swelling in areas fluid is collecting, recurring infections, thickening of the skin, restricted range of motion, and a feeling of tightness or heaviness.
What Causes It?
Lymphedema can be caused by anything that damages the lymphatic system. However, there are some common culprits. Cancer can affect the lymphatic system by blocking off the lymph vessels. An example of this would be a cancerous breast tumor blocking the flow of lymphatic fluid. Surgery is another potential cause of lymphedema. Some surgeries may require the removal of lymph nodes for the treatment process. This can cause lymphedema in some cases. Parasites can also cause lymphedema by clogging the lymph nodes. Parasitic worms can cause infection and block lymphatic fluid. Chronic venous insufficiency is another potential culprit.
Lymphedema Treatment
Lymphedema is a condition that can sometimes go away on its own. However, it is recommended to see a doctor whenever lymphedema occurs to ensure recovery will be smooth. Lymphedema can cause serious complications like fluid leakage, breaking of the skin, sepsis, skin infection, and even cancer in rare cases.
