Vein Care

Premier Heart and Vein Center San Luis Obispo, CA

More than 80 million people in the United States have problems with their veins, the vessels that return blood to the heart once it has circulated through the body. Many people suffering from venous disorders come to vein specialists looking for treatment to either relieve pain or improve the visible appearance of diseased veins.

Veins have one-way valves that help keep blood flowing in the proper direction. If these valves stop functioning the way they are supposed to, blood can flow backwards and pool in the vein, causing it to stretch.

These enlarged blood vessels fall into two groups: spider veins and varicose veins. Spider veins are visible on the surface of the skin as red, blue or purple lines. Varicose veins are larger and deeper and often look like bluish bumps under the skin.

What Are the Benefits of Vein Care Treatment?

Treatment of your vein problems offers many benefits from improving the way you feel about yourself to relieving irritating symptoms. Some of the benefits you can reap by having vein care treatment include:

  • Improved self-esteem
  • Reduced risk of blood clots
  • Reduced itching
  • Reduced throbbing, cramps, or restless legs
  • Alleviation of pain in the area of damaged veins, frequently in legs
  • Improved comfort when walking and moving around
  • Improved quality of sleep
  • Reduction in leg swelling

Talk to us about what the unique benefits may be for you.

Dr. Stevens and our staff make sure you are fully informed of all of the risks and benefits. We'll also discuss how we mitigate risks and what you can do to prepare for treatment.

Who Are the Ideal Candidates for Vein Care Treatment?

Ideal candidates for vein care treatment are patients who have varicose or spider veins or are symptomatic. Another ideal candidate might be someone who is overweight or was pregnant several months ago or longer, either of which can put extra stress on veins. Someone whose job requires standing for long periods of time or sitting for hours without moving around might be an ideal candidate for vein care treatment. Painful legs from venous ulcers or overall swelling in legs can also make you an ideal candidate for vein care treatment.

Can I Combine Vein Procedures?

Treatments can be done over several visits, but generally not during the same visit. Each case is unique and comes with benefits and risks of vein care treatment. Sclerotherapy and radiofrequency ablation are both minimally invasive, and do not require you to take any sick days from work or stay off your feet. Dr. Stevens might suggest wearing compression stockings temporarily or ongoing. Discuss which type of treatment or multiple treatments would be best for your situation.

How Long Will the Results of My Vein Care Treatment Last?

Again, since your situation is unique, there is no definite timeframe for how long results will last. Each type of treatment also has a different timeline, depending on the severity of the veins that require special care. Depending on your treatment plan, we will discuss what results you can expect and what future treatment may benefit you. Generally, these treatments are long-lasting.

What Are the Risks of Vein Care Treatment?

Any medical procedure has risks and the exact risks depend on the treatment. Risks that could come with receiving vein care treatment are minimal, but they include:

  • Bruising
  • Infection
  • Inflammation of blood vessels, or nerves
  • Darkening of skin
  • Blood clot
